Deported Salvadorans struggle upon return to homeland

Americas Now

An estimated two million Salvadorans live in the United States, many of them without proper documentation.

Under the administration of former U.S. President Barack Obama, 150,000 undocumented immigrants were sent back to El Salvador, and the rate of deportations has not slowed down under President Trump’s government, with some 11,000 deportees having been made return in the first six months of 2017.

For many, going home does not equal an easy homecoming. From threats of gang violence to the angst of unemployment, readjusting to life can be daunting.

Correspondent Harris Whitbeck reports on what deportees face, once they are forced to return to the homeland they left years before.
