Nonstop rainstorms have caused severe floods and mudslides in Central and Southern China. More than 30 people have been killed, and 15 are missing.

Forecasters warned it could be Wednesday before record flooding on the Xiangjiang River in Hunan Province starts receding.

The river is more than 3 meters above the official warning level. Workers used 60,000 sandbags to build a wall to direct floodwaters away from the city.

“According to the amount of water coming from upstream, water levels may have reached their peak, but could rise another 2-3 centimeters,” Tang Yunzhe from the Yongzhou Water Authority said.

In the city of Xiangxiang, more than 1,300 high school students were forced to evacuate their dormitories.
