A retired teacher reaches fame in her 70’s singing the lyrics of love

Americas Now

This week’s Urban Voice on “Americas Now” is from Brazil and proof that some things in life are worth waiting for.

Dona Onete is a musical sensation in the biggest nation in Latin America. Her concerts are usually packed with young fans. Surprising, perhaps, as she is nearly 80 and only began performing when she was over 70.

Dona has been dubbed Brazil’s version of the Buena Vista Social Club, the Cuban group which became famous when most other people would be well into their retirement.

Onete has just released her second album, “Banzeiro.” She is already working on her third.
