A new law in Costa Rica has made animal cruelty a crime.

The act of killing a domesticated animal is now punishable with jail time. And a fine is imposed on anyone caught mistreating or abandoning a pet.

Costa Rican pet owners held a ceremony to praise the Animal Welfare Act.
