Hollywood illustrator Brenda Chi challenging Asian stereotypes

When she was a kid, Brenda Chi loved watching sitcoms and cartoons on TV. She saw strong female characters, but they were mostly white.

Now as an illustrator in Los Angeles, Chi is trying to make sure more Asian characters are part of the storylines in her projects.

The Asian-American people on her work challenge stereotypes.

GCTN’s Patrice Howard shows how Chi is exploring her own story as a Chinese American woman in Hollywood working to break stereotypes through art. And how she is actively supporting other artists in Hollywood to do the same.

Chi said she wants young Asian American girls to see themselves in pop culture.

Her work was recently featured in a graphic anthology based on the life of former Star Trek actor George Takei.
