Mexican farmers face bankruptcy in earthquake aftermath

Mexico is still assessing damage, two months after multiple earthquakes devastated large parts of the country.

Hundreds of thousands of people are struggling to get their lives and businesses back in order.

But the hardest hit group, could be facing bankruptcy.

CGTN’s Franc Contreras reports.

For more than a century, farmers in Mexico’s south-central state of Morelos have made their living producing rice.

The rice producing town of Jojutla was the epicenter of the earthquake which struck on Sept 19. It destroyed local buildings, including this colonial-era church. And in a blow to the local economy, the quake also severely damaged the San Jose rice mill, one of four in the state of Morelos.

Local rice producers are still unable to process their grain and get it to market. The president of a Morelos state rice producers’ association said many regional rice farmers face possible bankruptcy.
