A conversation with playwriting success story Karen Zacarias

Americas Now

You may have heard of actor, composer and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda. He’s the creator of the Tony Award-winning musical “Hamilton” on Broadway. He’s one of a handful of Latin American playwrights whose work is being produced in the United States.

Here in Washington DC there’s another playwright with Latin roots who has been hard at work as well. Her plays are a big hit with adult audiences but she’s also making an impact on children.

“Americas Now” sat down with Karen Zacarias at The Kennedy Center.

In addition to telling us about her upbringing as the granddaughter of a famous Mexican movie director, she explains why creating Latino characters is important to her work. She also discusses the play-writing program she started for kids in Washington. And the performance they gave at The White House.

Check out our engaging interview with this delightful dramatist from DC.

This week’s “Urban Voice” is…Karen Zacarias.
