Ushering in the New Year, the evening of January 1 hosted the first ‘supermoon’ of 2018. A supermoon occurs when the moon is full at the same time its orbit is closest to Earth – also known as ‘perigree’.

This supermoon is the second of this winter season and another, “Super Blood Blue Moon,” is expected this month on Jan. 31. That supermoon will coincide with a total lunar eclipse.
