New technology is changing the way Guatemala views its ancient past

Americas Now

Modern technology has allowed scientists to uncover an ancient city in the rainforest of Guatemala.

In July 2017, archaeologists from the United States and Guatemala made a fascinating find deep in the Peten Jungle. They unearthed a royal tomb. It’s shedding new light on one of the most mysterious civilizations in the Americas. And the laser imagery being used to scan the jungle vegetation is providing a wealth of other information as well.

A collection of figurines found in the royal tomb are currently on exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California. They will also be headed to China in 2018.
