Habitat destruction threatens South America’s spectacled bear

Americas Now

South America’s only wild bear species is endangered. It’s called the Spectacled Bear and was given its name because, in many cases, the circles around its eyes look like eyeglasses.

The Spectacled Bear is in peril as a result of hunting and habitat destruction.

But a veterinarian from Colombia is trying to save the species. He’s opened a rehabilitation facility where the bears receive treatment and care.

His hope is that one day the bears can be returned to a healthy habitat in the wilderness.
