During his visit to Chile and Uruguay, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi participated in the China-CELAC meeting.
The group, encompassing Latin America and the Caribbean, discussed cooperation between the two sides of the world.
In a show of the importance of the region to China, President Xi Jinping wrote a letter calling on Latin America and Caribbean countries to actively participate in the Belt and Road Initiative.
