Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is standing his ground, saying police recommendations he be indicted on corruption charges “will end in nothing.”

Netanyahu addressed the nation, denying allegations he accepted gifts for favors, and negotiated with a newspaper owner to provide positive coverage of himself in exchange for weakening a rival media outlet.

These allegations, the prime minister said, make no sense.

“Citizens of Israel, I am not here for personal gain, if that was what was driving me, I would have been somewhere else long ago,” Netanyahu said. “What drives me is one thing: to assure the future of our state.”

While investigators are recommending Netanyahu be prosecuted, the final decision is left to Israel’s Attorney General.
