U.S. police on scene near the National Security Agency in Forte Mead, Maryland.

Authorities are investigating a shooting at an entrance to the National Security Agency outside Washington, D.C.

At least one person was shot and wounded, and one person was in custody.

A Fort Meade spokesman confirmed one person had been injured and transported and that a main highway was closed near the facility, a U.S. Army installation about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Washington.

A TSA statement on the matter reads, “This morning shortly after 7:00 AM a vehicle attempted to enter NSA’s secure campus in Ft. Meade, Maryland without authorization. The situation is under control and there is no ongoing security or safety threat. Weapons were discharged in the course of the incident, which remains under investigation at this time. Several individuals were transported to area hospitals; however, preliminary reports do not presently indicate that there are injuries attributable to gunfire. The FBI is presently leading the investigation.”

Helicopter footage from the site shows what appears to be a black SUV crashed into a security barrier. There appear to be bullet holes in the windshield. Airbags were deployed in the SUV.

A White House spokesperson said President Trump has been briefed on the incident.

Security around the facility was tight Wednesday morning as police continue their investigation.

An NSA source close to the investigation tells reporters there is “no nexus to terrorism.”
