How to become a member of China’s top political advisory body

When we talk about the members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, names that first come to mind are usually movie stars like Jackie Chan and sports personalities like Yao Ming.

Aside from them, there are also over 2,000 members at the national level selected every 5 years.

They come from all walks of life, from politicians and economists to religious leaders and doctors. And of course, even celebrities and sports stars.

Even though CPPCC members’ proposals are not legally binding, their voices, insights and opinions are greatly appreciated. But how do they become members of China’s top political advisory body?

Generally speaking, members are selected through recommendations and consultations. For instance, to become a member of the national committee of the CPPCC, candidates need to first be recommended by an honorable source.

They’re then reviewed by the relevant organization. If successful there, their names go forward to the preceding CPPCC National Committee for deliberation, before released to the public along with all the other successful candidates.
