Hollywood’s awards season wrapped up with the 90th Academy Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles.

When it came to the big prizes, there was no single big winner.

This was a year where the prizes were really shared among greats.

CGNT’s Phil Lavelle reports.

“The Shape of Water,” received two of the big awards. It had been up for 13 so was expected to do well all along. It gave Guillermo Del Toro Best Director, who had been considered a strong contender from the start. And also taking perhaps the biggest prize of the night: Best Picture.

“Darkest Hour” gave Gary Oldman a win for Best Actor.

This was one of two world war movies up for Oscars. His portrayal of Winston Churchill was described as phenomenal by critics although he hadn’t been considered the favorite all along.

But Frances McDormand had been the favorite for Best Actress.  Few seemed surprised that her powerful portrayal of a grieving mother wowed the academy to such an extent.

And as she took that prize, she made a point of bringing all of the women together, highlighting an undertone of this year’s show.

The Oscars wraps up for another year; a year which has seen award season overshadowed by the darker side of the industry.

This show is over but that conversation and those uncomfortable truths will continue for many more months to come.
