China & Brazil join forces for major push in renewable energy

It’s the first ocean wave-powered plant in Latin America: an open sky laboratory in Brazil’s northern coast.  It’s a pilot project that was tested in 2012 and can now generate electricity, just like an hydroelectric dam.
The plant has evolved, and is just one example of Brazil and China’s green technology partnership. CGTN’s Lucrecia Franco reports.

It all began in 2009 with the founding of the China-Brazil Center for Climate and Energy Innovation. The partnership joins two major engineer centers: COPPE linked to Rio de Janeiro’s Federal University, and China’s Tsinghua University.

One of the main goals of the center is academic exchanges between Brazilian and Chinese researchers that studying climate change. Several Chinese students are in Rio working on deep water technologies.

Thus far, biodiesel is one of the center’s most successful projects and is already into production. Other projects, like ocean wave power, could take some time. Even so, experts at the center believe that these projects are the future for greenhouse emissions reduction.
