Former head of Transparency International talks corruption in the Americas

Americas Now

Corruption is the theme of this year’s Summit of the Americas hosted by Peru. The Peruvian government has seen a complete turnover in 2018 – even at the very top – because of corruption allegations.

Some of the accusations were tied to Odebrecht – Latin America’s largest construction firm. Odebrecht led to the downfall of three presidents.

In March 2018, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was forced to resign just 20 months into his first term leading the country into a political crisis.

Two former Peruvian presidents remain entangled in the Odebrecht scandal. Ollanta Humala is awaiting trial while Alejandro Toledo is a fugitive fighting extradition on corruption charges.

Americas Now anchor Elaine Reyes talked to former Global Chair of Transparency International, Jose Ugaz, at the Summit of the Americas in Peru. They discussed what more needs to be done to combat corruption.
