Yuan Sha started playing the guzheng, a classic Chinese instrument, when she was just six-years-old. There were no guzheng teachers in her hometown of Zhejiang, Tiantai so she took the bus to Beijing for lessons; a 14 hour ride all by herself.  When she was nine years old, she was accepted to an elementary school affiliated with the Central Conservatory of Music and, after years of practice and determination, she became a skilled and professional guzheng player. She’s mastered the art form so well that she now holds many accolades: the post graduate supervisor at the Central Conservatory of Music for guzheng, Dean of the Chinese Guzheng College, and President of the China Guzheng Art Troupe.

In 2009, she performed for President Obama during his official visit to China, and would later perform at the 2017 BRICS Summit in Xiamen, China, and at New York’s Lincoln Center where we caught up with her in late 2017.
