Kim Jong Un visits China for second time, meets Xi Jinping

Kim Jong Un of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea had an unannounced meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Kim visited China’s northeast to Dalian, for his second meeting with Xi in two months.

Kim emphasized that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula can be achieved, but on certain conditions.

CGTN’s Robert Farr reports.

The meeting of the two leaders took place in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.

Chinese President Xi said he was happy to see that relations between China and DPRK and the situation on the Korean Peninsula have both made positive progress since the two leaders last met in March.

Xi Jinping said he was willing to meet Kim again to make joint efforts to push forward the healthy and stable development of China-DPRK relations, achieve long-lasting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.

DPRK leader Kim Jong Un said both the DPRK-China friendship and the situation on the Korean Peninsula have undergone meaningful progress since March this year.

As the regional situation is developing rapidly, Kim said he came to China again to meet with Xi and inform him of the situation with hopes to strengthen strategic communication and cooperation with China, deepen the DPRK-China friendship, and promote regional peace and stability.

Kim said this meeting will deepen mutual trust and promote closer and comprehensive development of relations between the two countries.

The two leaders had an in-depth exchange of views and reached an important consensus on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim said denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a consistent and clear position of the DPRK. He said that as long as relevant parties eliminate their hostile policy and security threat toward the DPRK, denuclearization can be achieved.

Kim also briefed Xi Jinping on recent developments in the DPRK’s domestic development and Party building.

Xi Jinping said China supports the DPRK in shifting its strategic focus to economic construction, and supports its development path in line with its own national conditions.
