U.S. President Trump has announced via Twitter that the summit between himself and DPRK leader Kim Jong Un will take place June 12 in the island nation of Singapore.

The meeting will be the first between a sitting U.S. President and a leader of the DPRK. In addition normalization of relations between the two nations and other weighted topics, the stated goal of the summit is the denuclearization of DPRK’s weapons program and stability on the Korean peninsula.

In his announcement Tweet, Trump stated “We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!”

Trump previously stated he wished to hold the historic meeting at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the fortified border area in between the two Koreas, but reports indicate his advisers preferred the more neutral location of Singapore.

Just hours before the announcement, Trump was at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to greet the three Korean-Americans who had been released Wednesday by the DPRK. The three men had been held inside the DPRK for over a year on charges of espionage or “hostile acts.”

Accompanying the released prisoners was newly minted Secretary of State Pompeo, who had travelled to Pyongyang ahead of the summit to negotiate their release.
