Chile creates marine parks to protect its ocean

Americas Now

Before Chilean President Michelle Bachelet left office in 2018, she signed into law protections for several areas of land and ocean.

The protections include the Juan Fernandez Islands located 665 kilometers off of Chile’s central coast. Only 700 people inhabit the area which is richer in plant and bird species than the Galapagos Islands.

The environmental protection laws represent a major victory for ocean conservation.

Chile is one of the world’s leading exporters of fish.
