Britain’s Prince Harry has married his mixed-race American sweetheart, actress Meghan Markle, to the delight of tens of thousands of fans gathered in Windsor, and millions more who watched around the world.

CGTN’s Kate Parkinson reports on this extraordinary day.

There was not a cloud in the sky as Meghan Markle arrived at St George’s Chapel, Windsor to marry her prince.

She wore a minimalistic pure white gown wasdesigned by British designer Clare Waight Keller, the artistic director of French fashion house Givenchy.

Walking down the aisle, the bride’s long white silk veil — embroidered with flowers from each of the 53 Commonwealth countries — trailed behind her.

While the ceremony was traditional, the couple had put their own modern touches on it, with a performance by a gospel group in addition to the traditional hymns, prayers and readings. Also, they chose to omit the word “obey” from their vows.

“I Harry, take you, Meghan, to be my wife, to have and to hold from, this day forward; for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part,” the prince repeated as the Archbishop of Canterbury said the words.

“I Meghan, take you, Harry, to be my husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward; for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part,” his bride repeated in turn.

Outside, tens of thousands of people crowded the streets of Windsor. Some had traveled all the way from the U.S. to see their American princess.

“There is so much negativity in the world right now and this just brings so much joy,” said Constance, who came from the U.S. state of Pennsylvania to watch the festivities. “Doesn’t a wedding always bring so much joy.”

“Especially, a happy one like this,” interjected her companion, Chris. “And on such a gorgeous day,” added Constance.

Emerging from the chapel, the newlyweds, who will be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, shared a kiss in front of the jubilant crowds before departing in a Cinderella-style horse drawn carriage tour of Windsor, smiling and waving at their cheering fans, many of whom has camped out for days to see the royal couple.

It is a love story that has captured the hearts of so many, a whirlwind romance that blossomed into a modern-day fairy tale.  So many people here and around the world are now hoping Harry and Meghan get their happily every after.
