U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing to brief him on the Singapore summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. Xi said China and the U.S. share an interest and responsibility for safeguarding world peace.

Pompeo also met with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, to thank China for its help in bringing Pyongyang to the negotiating table.

CGTN’s Zheng Yibing reports.

“We appreciate all that China did to help put us in the place where that summit could happen and we thank you for that,” Pompeo said. “There is still more work to be done by China and the United States to get to the ultimate outcome.”

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi praised the achievements of the summit in Singapore.

“The meeting has put the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula on the right track to talks and peaceful settlement,” Wang Yi said. “It has historic significance.”

Both diplomats then briefed the media on matters of areas of common concern, such as the trade dispute.

“We hope that both countries utilize constructive ways to settle our differences, and resolve relevant issues through a win-win solution, instead of the lose-lose approach,” Wang Yi said.

Pompeo said that despite these problems, both sides have a lot to work together on.

“When we cooperate, United States and China can make great progress,” Pompeo said. “There is much work ahead for us. I am committed to talking with you and with China, to achieve those objectives.”

Next year will be the 40th anniversary of China-U.S. bilateral ties, and more talks are expected. They will pave the way for the future ties between the two countries.
