Adopting instead of buying a pet

A growing number of Chinese people own, or hope to own, household pets.

According to an industry white paper, the number of cats and dogs in China totaled 87.5 million in 2017.

But with the boom, also comes cases of pet mill abuse and abandonment.

That’s why some pet advocacy groups have started a campaign pushing for “Adoption, Instead of Buying”.

Groups even held an adoption day in 38 Chinese cities to encourage people save pets in shelters.

Trying to get people to adopt stray pets is a challenge across the globe.

CGTN interviewed people from Rural Dog Rescue and Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, D.C. to learn more about the uphill battle to save cats and dogs.
