Celebrating the fifteenth birthday of some special senoritas

Americas Now

In Latin America, a girl’s fifteenth birthday is considered a momentous occasion. It signifies the transition from girlhood to womanhood.

This rite of passage is typically celebrated with a big party known as a “Quinceanera.” It features ball gowns, music, dancing and food.

However, not all families can afford to host such an expensive event. One organization in Colombia is trying to change that. The country’s National Police Department has been arranging “Sweet 15” birthday parties for girls who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
