In 2018 the Dominican Republic became the latest country to establish diplomatic ties with China. It is also home to the Caribbean’s largest community of Chinese immigrants.

People of Chinese descent have been relocating to the DR in waves since the mid-1800’s. In the mid-2000’s the capital, Santo Domingo, officially launched the nation’s first “Chinatown.”

Correspondent Nitza Soledad Perez chronicles the history of Chinese Dominicans and explores their place in modern society.

The Dominican Republic’s business community is praising the new diplomatic relationship their country has begun with China. Entrepreneurs hope their country can function as an intermediary for Chinese exports and manufacturing.
