US Governors talk trade and foreign diplomacy at national conference

Trade tensions and foreign diplomacy, are key issues on the minds of U.S. governors. Many have gathered in New Mexico for their summer conference. This year, interest is also focused on economic relations with China. CGTN’s Mike Walter has more.

The core of this economic relationship between China and the U.S. happens on the state level. That’s why so much deep engagement by the governors, economic development leaders, and trade representatives are in Santa Fe looking to deepen the engagement because it is such a big economic payoff for them.

The first panel discussion Thursday focused on Chinese investment in the U.S. and how states are working to attract more of those investment dollars.

Panelists say that’s why meetings like these are so important. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper calls the current trade war regrettable.

The big question from governors here is how long the trade dispute will go on, and what will the long term relationship between China and the U.S. look like in the years to come.
