A series of wildfires continue to rage in California, with 16 active sites that have both destroyed property and taken lives. The largest and most destructive is the Carr Fire burning in Shasta and Trinity Counties. Firefighters have contained 20 percent of the Carr Fire, but the remainder continues to burn, leaving eight people dead and thousands evacuated.

This year’s extreme season of wildfire in California, and other western states, has been relentless since late June. Below is a collection of photos from various locations in the state.
