An award-winning illustrator tells the tale of Chinese immigration to Cuba

Americas Now

A renowned Cuban artist is bringing the story of the Chinese in Cuba to life. His name is Ajubel, an illustrator and designer who lives in Spain. He is collaborating with Leonardo Padura, a man who is perhaps Cuba’s most famous living writer and author of the series “Memory of Cuba.”

Their work explores aspects of Cuban popular history and re-creates the story of Chinese immigration to Havana.

“Americas Now” met up with Ajubel in his studio in Valencia to talk about his creative process. He is our Urban Voice.

Cuba’s “Chinatown” in Havana is one of the oldest in Latin America dating back to the 1840’s. It’s been in decline in recent decades but the Chinese government is helping fund its revitalization.
