The Heat: Racism in Brazil

The Heat

A telenovela, or soap opera, has reignited the discussion about race in Brazil.

The story takes place in the state of Bahia, where nearly 80 percent of the population declares themselves as black or of mixed race.

But all the main roles are played by white actors, highlighting what the Afro-Brazilians claim as lack of representation and visibility.

CGTN’s Lucrecia Franco reports.

To discuss:

  • Marcelo Paixao is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin and an expert on race relations in Brazil.
  • Djamila Ribeiro is a Brazilian philosopher.
  • Paulo Sotero is the director of the Brazil Institute, at the Wilson Center.
  • Marcelo Lins is a journalist for GloboNews, the largest 24 hours news channel in Brazil.
