A time of solitary reflection along the Santiago Trail

Americas Now

The Santiago Trail is one of Europe’s most important pilgrimages. It starts in France and ends on the far west coast of Spain.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of people attempt the month-long, 500-mile hike. It’s a spiritual journey for some, a touristic trek for others and also a path of adventure.

Among the pilgrims are a growing number of Latinos.

Correspondent Gerry Hadden walked the Santiago Trail to find out why they came.

There is a pilgrim certificate for those who walk at least 96 kilometers or bike for more than 193 kilometers. And those who embark on the journey near the city of Navarra receive a free, “red wine” fountain, courtesy of a local winery.
