US and Chinese Businesses Tell Trump Officials That US Tariffs will Damage American Industries

U.S. President Donald Trump said he could make good on his threat to impose tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports quote “very soon.”

Trump also said he’s already got a plan to tax all Chinese goods shipped to the United States.

Trump made the remarks while traveling with reporters. He told them he’s “being strong on China because I have to be.”

According to a transcript from reporters who were present, “The $200 billion we’re talking about, could take place very soon, depending what happens with them. To a certain extent it’s going to be up to China…And I hate to say that, but behind that, there’s another $267 billion ready to go on short notice if I want.”

White House economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, told Bloomberg Television, Friday, that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are in communication and may speak at the upcoming the Group of 20 Summit.  The White House has not released any readouts of phone calls between the leaders since May 8.

Kudlow said Trump is “dead serious” about pushing Beijing to change its trade policies.

Here’s how Beijing responded to the tariff threat on Thursday.

“If the U.S. ignores the objections of the majority of companies, and adopts new tariffs against China, China will have to take counter-measures. China reiterates that dialogue and consultation, rather than a trade war, is the correct way to settle trade frictions,” said Gao Feng, spokesperson for the Chinese Commerce Ministry,

In a development related to China’s ongoing efforts to further open its economy, the People’s Bank of China – issued a statement Friday, saying it’ll be easier to buy and sell the Chinese currency, adding “the scope of yuan trading will expand.”
