He’s been dubbed the “Brazilian Trump.” And like the U.S. president, Jair Bolsonaro’s candidacy wasn’t taken seriously by everyone at first.

But with a tough stance on crime and corruption, he won support despite controversial views on democracy and minorities. And when the votes were counted, Bolsonaro came close to winning the presidential election in the first round.
