Canto Llano: Songs sung by cowboys on the plains of Colombia

Americas Now

Cowboys have graced the grasslands of Colombia and Venezuela for centuries. Their unique traditions and culture have even been admired and recognized by UNESCO — the United Nations Cultural Agency.

One of those traditions is in a popular chant that they sing during farming activities. For example, songs are sung to cows to help relax them during milking. Or by herders trying to corral cattle.

But this musical heritage has become endangered by changing industry. And some fear the music of the fields could be lost forever. Ways of safeguarding these traditions include educating youth about them and promoting them in schools and festivals.

The Canto Llano is our Urban Voice.
