Disney to start streaming service to complete with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu

2019 is a big year for Walt Disney Studios. It’s launching a streaming service called Disney+.

CGTN’s Phil Lavelle explains.

Joining the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, Disney+ has some distinct advantages:

It owns Marvel and Star Wars.  And is planning to develop TV series from both.

Disney hasn’t said when in 2019 the service will launch.  Or how much it will cost.

But rival Netflix has already cancelled some of its original Marvel content.

Daredevil has been scrapped, so has Iron Fist and Luke Cage.

“Disney now is such a huge, huge kind of umbrella over entertainment and popular culture that they really kind of have the advantage here. They can kind of sweep up anything and make it into a streaming series and now they have the platform to do it. They don’t have to give it away to another streaming service. It’s theirs,” Lorraine Ali, TV critic with the Los Angeles Times said.

Disney won’t make big budget movies exclusively for the service.

CEO Bob Iger, said those with budgets over $100 million will still go to theaters first.

So Star Wars movies such as “Solo” will still be on released for all to see.

With Disney hoping it can dominate both the big screen and the small screen.
