Rio de Janeiro becomes world's capital of architecture

The postcard city, recognized as much for its beaches and mountains as its dazzling carnival costumes, Rio de Janeiro is also home to some of the world’s most impressive and varied architecture from colonial to baroque, neo-gothic to neo-classic, art deco to art nouveau and modern to contemporary.

The contrasts can be startling to the eye.

Now, the city has been chosen as UNESCO’s World Capital of Architecture for 2020.

The award, the first of its kind, is intended to focus global thinking on the future of urban centers without destroying the past. CGTN’s Lucrecia Franco reports.
