An “organ donation” law saves lives in Ecuador

Americas Now

Ecuador is one of the countries in Latin America that permits organ transplants to be performed by the public health system. The Andean nation has three accredited hospitals with the capability to perform organ transplants. Over 9,000 doctors have received some sort of training to participate in organ transplant procedures.

Correspondent Harris Whitbeck reports from Guayaquil.

The procedure is one of the most aggressive forms of medical treatment available. Ecuador’s National Registry states that 98% of the country’s citizens have agreed to be organ donors.

The country has adopted a law that makes everyone who lives in Ecuador an automatic organ donor unless they specify otherwise.
