Venezuelans cross the Colombian border desperately seeking healthcare

Americas Now

Venezuelans have fled their country by the thousands to go to neighboring Colombia. A large number have been pregnant or chronically ill and hope to receive medical treatment.

In many cases, basic medicines that were once hard to find in Venezuela, can no longer can be obtained at all.

But many Colombians are not embracing the migration.

Correspondent Toby Muse filed a report from the border of Colombia and Venezuela before the Venezuelan government closed it. And before Venezuela plunged into darkness due to a massive blackout.

Colombia’s Foreign Minister said if the migration situation doesn’t change, four million Venezuelans could be living in his country by 2021. That would come at a cost of almost $10 billion to the Colombian government.
