Legendary music shop Casa Latina keeps the beat alive in New York’s Spanish Harlem

Americas Now

Most people are familiar with Harlem on the West Side of New York City. It features such landmarks as the Apollo Theater, Malcolm X Boulevard and Dance Theater of Harlem.

What’s lesser known is the Harlem neighborhood on the East Side. East Harlem. It’s been a haven for immigrants since the mid-1800’s.

In the mid-1900’s when a huge influx of Puerto Ricans re-located here, it was given the name “Spanish Harlem.” It also became known as “El Barrio.”

One man has had his finger on the pulse of the community for decades. He’s the owner of a music store that has become a legend in the neighborhood.

Our Urban Voice is the owner of Casa Latina…Vicente Barreiro.
