Brasilia became Brazil’s capital city in 1960. It’s the fourth biggest metropolis in the country and has three million inhabitants

But until last year, this city with the highest per-capita income in the country was home to the largest open dump in Latin America. It’s just twelve miles away from the Presidential Palace.

Thousands of people lived and worked in the dump, pulling from the waste anything that could be reused or resold.

Correspondent Maria Valls traveled to Brasilia to learn how the closure of the dump a year ago has impacted the economy, the environment and the people who relied on the trash for their survival.
