At the G20 closing ceremony, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the summit’s host, urged world leaders to find common ground, and that’s what Presidents Trump and Xi found, as they agreed to restart trade talks.

Trump referred to Beijing as a strategic partner and praised President Xi.

U.S. President Trump has been on a charm offensive in Osaka and that even extended to the press. In a news conference that stretched 90 minutes, Trump said his most important meeting of the week had led to an agreement to restart negotiations.

Trump confirmed that telecommunications giant Huawei will be able to resume purchases of high-tech U.S. components.

Details on the deal will follow, but Trump said that China had agreed to purchase agricultural goods.

While negotiations continued, Trump — responding to a request from President Xi — pledged better visa access to Chinese students and recently called China a potential strategic partner.
