An online video shows a police officer firing three rounds in Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong. One protester was injured. Another man was set on fire by protesters in Ma On Shan. He is in critical condition.

“After five months of this social unrest, I think the whole Hong Kong community has been under great pressure,” said Wong Wai-Shun, Senior Superintendent of Operations. “Not only police officers, but also our citizens and even the protesters. And I would also add, I’m sure that the rioters are under pressure. And the level of violence used by the rioters has been escalated significantly.”

Hong Kong Protesters took to the streets to disrupt transport. Online forum posts called on people to go on strike and boycott classes. Rioters smashed traffic lights and vandalized the subway. 

“There is still any wishful thinking that by escalating violence, the Hong Kong SAR government will yield to pressure to satisfy the so-called political demands, I’m making this statement clear and loud here: That will not happen. Violence is not going to give us any solution to the problems that Hong Kong is facing, said Carrie Lam, Hong Kong Sar Chief Executive. 

The Hong Kong SAR government says ending the violence in the region is still a priority. But Monday’s incidents have increased the atmosphere of insecurity in the city.
