President Xi Jinping has arrived in Brasilia, Brazil to attend the 11th BRICS summit.

Besides the summit, Xi is also expected to hold talks with his Brazilian counterpart, Jair Bolsonaro, and sign various cooperation deals.

Last month, Bolsonaro paid a state visit to China, and agreed to strengthen the relations between two of the largest emerging economies in the East and West Hemispheres.

In Brasilia, Xi is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of the BRICS business forum, closed and public meetings of the BRICS summit, and the BRICS leaders’ dialogue with the BRICS Business Council and the New Development Bank.

A leaders’ declaration is expected to be released.

As some Western countries see rising unilateralism and protectionism, the BRICS issued the Johannesburg Declaration on their last summit in 2018, which supports free trade, multilateralism and the authority of the United Nations.

BRICS cooperation enjoyed sound development in the past 10 years, which was dubbed a “golden decade” for the five-member bloc, including China, Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa.

In 2018, the five emerging economies accounted for about a quarter of global gross domestic product, and 16.3 percent of global trade.
