She was on her way to becoming a kindergarten teacher. But she ended up on the red carpet at the Oscars.

Yalitza Aparicio made headlines for her leading role in Alfonso Cuaron’s celebrated film “Roma.”

Cuaron’s film caught the attention of millions round the world. Not least because Yalitza, its lead actress, was an indigenous woman from rural Mexico with no previous acting experience.

And she very nearly won an Oscar for her acting debut.

“Americas Now” was given the rare chance to talk to Mexico’s most unexpected star. Correspondent Lara Rodriguez met with Yalitza to hear about her journey to stardom.
