Democrats and Republicans continue to butt heads on impeachment trial

As Congress reconvened for the New Year, lawmakers clashed over how President Trump’s impeachment trial in should proceed.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) criticized House Democrats for a ‘slapdash’ impeachment, calling it ‘rushed’ and ‘unfair,’ the Associated Press reports. McConnell indicated that he would not agree to Democrats call for new witnesses in the impeachment trial and would work for a swift acquittal.

The Senate trial can’t begin until House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) delivers the articles of impeachment, which were voted on last December. Pelosi is withholding the articles of impeachment until Senate leaders can reach an agreement on ground rules before moving forward.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), continued to press for more witnesses, all who refused to appear at the House proceedings.

“We need the whole truth,” Schumer said.
