The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought on what’s being called the worst economic recession since the Great Depression.

The International Monetary Fund issued stark predictions about the global economy for this year and next.

CGTN’s Yin Yue had an indepth chat with Zhang Tao, Deputy Managing Director of the IMF about that and other issues.

Zhang said, “We project right now in 2020, the global economies will grow at a negative rate at negative three percent. And we expect the global economy to rebound the positive rate for the year 2021 at the rate of 5.8 percent.”

He said that “this global solution will be best pursued by global efforts, particularly the concerted, coordinated joint effort by the international communities.” That way, he said, global economies can recover as soon as possible.

He added, “China has contributed greatly in the past and particularly during this process as we are fighting COVID-19. And I believe China will continue to make contributions to this process.”
