Peru’s COVID-19 lockdown is in its seventh week as the country grapples with the pandemic. One hot spot for coronavirus infections is turning out to be food markets especially in the country’s capital Lima.

One out of every five stallholders tested positive for COVID-19 at a popular street market in Lima.

The authorities launched spot tests in the Caquéta food market on Wednesday.

The surprise testing showed how rapidly the coronavirus was spreading in spite of Peru’s stringent lockdown.
Out of 854 stallholders, 163 tested positive.
