India is reopening after 2 1/2 months of lockdown brought by COVID-19.

But on Monday, the country recorded nearly 10,000 new infections, its highest ever daily spike in new cases.

India has more than 275,000 confirmed cases and 7,700 deaths from the disease, according to Johns Hopkins University.

It’s fifth in the world for total confirmed COVID-19 cases.

As malls, restaurants and places of worship reopen, many public spaces in two of the country’s hardest hit cities, New Delhi and Mumbai, will remain closed.

Schools and universities nationwide are also keeping their doors shut.

India had one of the largest COVID-19 lockdowns in the world.

NPR reports, about 100 million Indians lost their jobs because of the pandemic.

But some experts say the country is reopening too soon, as it’s yet to reach its peak infection rate.
