The U.S. and Russia have a long history of confrontation and engagement.

Ties between the two nuclear powers have been tested in recent years. From accusations of interfering in the 2016 U.S. elections to Russia’s role in Syria and the Ukraine conflict, navigating relations with Russia remains the United States biggest foreign policy challenge.

The latest flashpoint in U.S.-Russia ties, allegations Russia paid bounties to Taliban militants to kill U.S. troops, a claim Russia denies. U.S. officials now saying the intelligence on Russia is less than conclusive.
