Peru's president announces reforms to healthcare system

Peru marked its 199th year as an independent nation on July 28.

President Martin Vizcarra has announced sweeping reforms to the country’s healthcare system.

CGTN’s Dan Collyns reports from Lima.

Peru is one of Latin America’s hardest-hit nations, just behind Brazil and Mexico, and the seventh highest globally.

President Martín Vizcarra said without an early lockdown it could have been much worse.

He also said the pandemic had laid bare decades of underinvestment in healthcare but his government had multiplied six-fold the number of hospital beds and installed dozens of new hospitals.
